If you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday, then the Maldives Islands may just be the ticket. Lying 400 kilometers southwest of India, this double chain of 26 atolls features beautiful coral reefs, pristine white, sandy beaches and glistening ocean. In a word, it’s paradise.
But if you’re not sold on spending a whole week lazing on the beach – then here are five things to do while holidaying in this tropical getaway.
With breathtaking coral reefs, crystal clear water and a climate that’s warm year-round, the Maldives have become one of the world’s most popular diving destinations. Dive with sharks or manta rays, drift with the current or dive on the wrecks of the Victory or the British Loyalty. It is all ready and waiting for you, just below the surface, in the Maldives.
Many of the islands are owned and run by resorts. But if you want to really experience the Maldives, then spend some time on the islands inhabited by the locals. Wander through fishing villages, check out local crafts or take a night reef fishing trip with the local fishermen. It does not get better than this.
If you love the water, then the Maldives is going to be your very own slice of heaven. Spend a few hours learning water polo with the locals, or grab a surfboard, a Jet Ski or a kayak. How about parasailing? Kite-surfing? It’s all here ready for you to enjoy it.
Visit Hukuru Miskiiy, a mosque dating from the 1600s that’s made from coral stone, in the capital. Admire its beautiful minaret then check out the brand-new National Museum that’s close by. Spend time at Medhu Ziyarat, the resting place of Adul Barakat Yusuf, who converted the Maldives to Islam in 1153. Or, wander through the local fish and produce markets. If you’re with a group of shutterbugs, why not hire a seaplane and take some awesome holiday snaps? With foodies? Discover the mouth-watering local cuisine based on coconuts and seafood.
Most of the large resorts have their own spa facilities, but you can also find some local independent spas. Treat yourself to a few hours of luxury – unwind and relax. Have a massage or, for a touch of romance, book a couples massage.
Tourism is the biggest industry in the Maldives (fishing is second). Add these to their fabulous climate and stunning beaches – and you have a match made in heaven.
And don’t forget that lots of couples come to the Maldives and get married – it must be something in the water!
